Dear Coaches,
First of all, congratulations to the coaches of the teams still competing in the MHSAA State Tournament. Secondly, congratulations to all coaches as the number of close games, overtime games, upsets and the overall increase in the level of play in both regular and post season play contributed to make this year a tremendous success for Michigan high school hockey.
Similarly, the 2010 MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase was very successful, exciting and one of the largest attended in the history of the event. The new process for selecting the participating teams and determining opponents for each game produced the competition for which it was designed: 13 games were decided by one goal, 3 games went into overtime and 2 games ended in a tie. Over 10,000 fans and 41scouts (professional, junior and/or college level) were in attendance. Thirty six teams will be selected to compete in the 2011 MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase which will be held over the three days.
The dates for the 2011 MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase are Thursday, February 10th, Friday, February 11th and Saturday, February 12th. The MIHL, the City of Trenton and Trenton Public Schools will co-host the Showcase at the Kennedy Ice Arena in Trenton, Michigan.
The main objective of the MIHL is to maintain the reputation of the Prep Hockey Showcase as the premier high school hockey event in
The MIHL instituted the following selection process:
1. All teams must file a formal application to participate in the 2011 MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase. This application will request much more objective information than what was required in the previous years. The application and instructions appear at the end of this letter. This application must be received by the MIHL by April 1, 2010.
3. On December 20, 2010, the final 36 teams will be selected from the field of “Pre Acceptance” teams. The selection of the teams will be based upon the teams’ performance up to that point in the season as well as how the team’s performance is consistent with the information provided on the application. The games schedules and opponents for each team will be assigned in the first week of January, 2011.
4. The “Pre Acceptance” teams not selected for the 2011 MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase will have ample time to coordinate games with each other to complete their schedule. The MIHL will provide contact information for all teams not selected to facilitate scheduling between teams not selected. The MIHL realizes that this will require some effort by the teams involved, but that it is doable.
5. If you participated in past Showcases and are not interested in applying for the 2011 MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase, please advise us at once. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Todd Johnson at: tjdcc@comcast.net .
It is not a perfect process, but it is an attempt by the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase Selection Committee to maintain the integrity and mission of the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase – that is, to have the best teams and the most skilled players showcase their abilities and talents in a two game competitive atmosphere. If your team is not selected to participate in the 2011 MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase, it does not preclude your team from being selected for future Showcases – the field is expected to change annually.
As always, teams with excessive penalty minutes and/or teams that are known for the old style of play, characterized by clutching and grabbing, contact to the head and skirmishes after the whistle, will not be considered for the 2011 MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase.
Respectfully,
Todd Johnson
Secretary, MIHL
Chairman, MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase Selection Committee
