The 2010 MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase is in the books and the general consensus is that this edition of the Showcase was an unqualified success. Catholic Central Head Coach Todd Johnson summarized it, “I think it is safe to say that we met all of our objectives. The selection process gave us some outstanding and exciting games for the fans. The scouts were able to observe and evaluate some of the best talent in Michigan high school hockey. It truly was a showcase for the teams, the players, the fans and the scouts highlighted by strong competition and good sportsmanship.”
It provided very competitive games with over 18 games being decided by one or two goals with 6 games going into overtime. The Trenton – Orchard Lake St. Mary game which ended in a 2 – 2 tie, the 3 – 2 overtime win by Detroit Catholic Central over Howell and the Sault Ste. Marie 3 – 2 win over Grosse Pointe North were just a few examples of the more competitive games. The game with the most goals (Grosse Ile 9 – Livonia Churchill 8) also produced the leading point getters for the Showcase: from Grosse Ile, Mac Howey 7G and D J Hastings 7A and from Churchill, Mike Woynick 2G 5A.
As a result of its yearly improvements and as its reputation spreads, the exposure of the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase to the scouting community is in an upward trend. GP North Head Coach Scott Lock explains, “It’s not just the number of scouts showing up every year. It also the level of hockey competition they represent. Almost every participating team had a player that drew interest from one of the scouts.” This year there were over 60 scouts in attendance. Every USHL team and most NAHL teams were represented as were several Division III college hockey teams. Many of the leading Division I college hockey programs had one or two representatives in attendance and there were four NHL teams with scouts in the house.
For the first time, the MIHL was able to provide online live updates to the scores of each game and produce score sheets for all games. There were a few glitches but in the end it worked thanks to the efforts of Brian Sommariva, Design Runway, LLC who designed the MIHL website and the statistics system. Another first for the weekend was the addition of AJM Catering to the food service facilities. AJM Catering made their hockey debut at the 2010 Outdoor Classic and was asked to provide the same for the Showcase. They will be back.
