Andrew Miller, a 2007 graduate of Cranbrook Kingswood, was recently recognized by the United States Hockey League (USHL) for his play with the Chicago Steel this year.  He was named as the B2 Networks USHL Player of the Year and the CCM USHL Forward of the Year.  Miller was at the top of the league’s scoring race all season long and ended up with a league leading 82 points, with 32 goals and 50 assists.  Miller is one of just five 30-goal scorers in the league and broke the 80-point barrier, a mark that has been reached just three times in the last six seasons. In addition to leading the league in points, Miller also led the league in assists.

“In almost every game this season, Andrew showed time and time again that he was the best forward on the ice”, said Steel Head Coach Steve Poapst. “Not only is he a great offensive player, he is a

true leader on and off the ice, and a deserving recipient of these awards.”

In his junior and senior seasons (2006 & 2007) at Cranbrook, Andrew led the Cranes to back to back MHSAA Division III State Championships.  As a senior, he was named Mr. Hockey by the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association (MHSHCA).  He was named Co-MVP of the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) as well.

According to Andy Weidenbach, Head Coach CK Varsity Hockey, Miller’s achievements weren’t a total surprise, “We knew in his senior year that he definitely had the skill to be successful at the next level.  He saw the ice extremely well – he knew where everyone on the ice was.  He clearly has gotten stronger and worked on all aspects of his game as evidenced by his performance this year.  His success is a testament to his work ethic.  He is a classic Michigan high school hockey player success story.  He played three years of varsity at Cranbrook in the most competitive league, moved on to the USHL and will attend Yale in the fall.  He has been successful at every level so far and there is probably more to come.”

The United States Hockey League is the United States only Tier 1 Developmental League. The USHL is celebrating its 30th season of junior hockey in 2008-09.  With over 160 players already committed to NCAA Division I schools and 16 NHL Draft picks playing in the league, the USHL is the nation's foremost producer of junior hockey talent.  For more information, visit them on the web at www.ushl.com
