Novi -- Warren DeLaSalle capitalized against an undisciplined Novi team to advance to the Division 2 hockey state semifinals for the first time in school history after a 5-2 victory Tuesday night at the Novi Ice Arena.

DeLaSalle plays Midland at 8 p.m. Thursday at Compuware Arena in Plymouth.

DeLaSalle scored four of its five goals on power plays, and had two others waived off on account of a referee's whistle and the net being knocked off its moorings. Its second and third goals were during a critical 30-second juncture at the end of the second period.

Novi tied the game at 1 with a goal by Tyler Perpich, who was then penalized for an intentional slashing during the celebration. A minute later, Ryan McCullough received a roughing penalty, setting up a DeLaSalle 5-on-3. Not long after, DeLaSalle regained the lead on a goal by Matt Gasior, followed thirty seconds later by Brad Annas power-play goal to give DeLaSalle a 3-1 lead heading into the final period.

"We scouted them a little bit and knew they would take some penalties," said DeLaSalle coach Dan Barry, whose team was 4-for-9 on power plays. "We worked on our power plays the last couple days and just made sure we were ready to go with them."

Shane McKenna scored three minutes into the third period to put DeLaSalle ahead 4-1, and Austin Hibner completed the scoring with an empty-netter, DeLaSalle (22-5-1) lone goal with Novi at full strength.

Coole, who finished with a goal and an assist, opened the scoring with a power-play goal three minutes into the game.

"Tonight was just a great night for everyone," Coole said. Tyler Manning scored the second goal for Novi (20-6-2) in the third period, which featured nine penalties, including four unsportsmanlike conducts.

"DeLaSalle had a terrific team, they did an excellent job," Novi coach Todd Krygier said. "I thought that we took some stupid penalties that cost us the game."
