MIHL Mini Showcase a Maxi Success
The Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League held its first Mini Showcase December 9th at the Eddie Edgar Arena in Livonia and by all accounts it was a success. The games were close and very competitive:
Game Results: [Click on game for a box score]
CC (2) v DLS (2) OT;
BR (5) v. Liv. Stevenson (2);
U of D (3) v. PHN (1);
GPN (2) v CK (1);
According to League President, Andy Weidenbach the results were as expected, “We all (the coaches) thought, that top to bottom, this was as strong as the league has been and the competition level is quite high. Talent is deep on all the teams and there are some excellent hockey players throughout the league. It would be impossible to predict a league champions at this point.”
While the weather conditions probably had an adverse effect on the attendance, those in attendance, including several junior hockey and college hockey scouts, witnessed some outstanding play. According to Todd Johnson, CC Head Coach, De La Salle’s netminder may have been the MVP of the Mini Showcase, “John Kleinhans made 47 saves in our game which ended in 2 – 2 tie. He was the difference.” Junior forward Matthew Moore tallied twice for the U of D Jesuit Cubs in their 3 – 1 defeat of Port Huron Northern. “Matt seems to be getting stronger as the season progresses. At this point, he is our go to guy,” commented Head Coach Rick Bennets. Brother Rice junior forward Luke Jackson scored twice for the Warriors in 5 – 2 win over host school Livonia Stevenson. Grosse Pointe North also had an outstanding performance in the nets in their 2 – 1 defeat of Cranbrook. “Their goalie, Eric Rohrkemper stymied us all night, he was probably the difference in the game,” observed Andy Weidenbach.
Overall a successful Showcase for all involved, “It was great to get together like this and highlight our league. We want to thank the Livonia schools for their participation and support. A lot of good high school hockey competition and talent was on display at a single location and it gave the coaches an opportunity to see the other league members compete”, summarized Scott Lock, Head Coach G P North.
